One of the larger villages in Cheshire, Tarporley sits in the heart of the Cheshire Plains, surround by rolling countryside and fertile farming land. It is a village that is the centre of shopping and socialising in the area, formed around a thriving high street full of boutique shops, an array of eateries and the essential estate agents for perusing.

It’s name comes from the Old English ‘Toepelei’ which means ‘a pear wood near a hill’ (which is why Tarporley Primary Shcool has a pear as its emblem) and it is considered one of the most attractive villages in the county.

Located about 11 miles from the city of Chester, Tarporley offers a well-heeled escape to the country and provides the perfect base from which to explore the local area.

Explore the Sandstone Trail:

The Sandstone Trail is a popular hiking route that spans across the Cheshire countryside from Frodsham to Whitchurch. It stretches 34 miles along Cheshire’s Sandstone Ridge and offers breathtaking views of the landscape. What’s more it can be broken up into shorter trails to suit and is suitable for both casual walkers and seasoned hikers.

Discover some history:

History enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Beeston Castle, which is perched high on a rocky crag and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. (On clear days you can see all the way from The Pennines to the Welsh mountains.) The castle has a rich 4,000 year history, a replica Bronze Age roundhouse and 40-acre woodland park providing a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Indulge in local cuisine:

After a day of exploring, unwind at one of the quintessential British pubs in the area and sample delicious local dishes and experience the warm hospitality of the village. There’s one or two we can recommend!

The area is home to a host of amazing local suppliers too, so head to one of our favourite Farm Shops to take home some of the finest produce. There’s The Hollies Farm Shop which offers great gifts too and Rose Farm Shop in Utkinton with an excellent butchery and meet the animals area. And don’t miss out on some fresh homemade pastries from Ginger & Pickles Bakehouse. Or the ice-cream and family fun at The Ice Cream Farm.

Visting Tarporley, also means that you have the opportunity to visit our local suppliers that you sample when you stay with us; from Three Wrens Gin, where you can go on a distillery tour or make your own to the award-winning Weetwood Breweries and the reduced calorie Bach 95.

For kids, then there’s nowhere better than The Crocky Trail, a mile-long adventure park with slides, ropes, swings and more.

And if water is your thing, then head to Whitchurch Marina and travel the canals in style with day boat hire. Make sure that you visit Bunbury Staircase Locks too on your travels.
